Vinayaka Mission’s Kirupananda Variyar Medical College, Salem, was started in 1995 and is affiliated to the Dr MGR Medical University, Tamil Nadu. It became a constituent college of Vinayaka Mission’s Research Foundation in 2004. The institution offers UG and PG programmes with 23 well-established departments recognized by the Medical Council of India and accredited by NAAC. In addition, the institution runs a 560-bed multi-speciality hospital providing excellent health care.
Driven by a vision to address Salem’s need for quality education, Dr. A. Shanmugasundaram, a renowned philanthropist and educationist, founded Vinayaka Mission’s in 1981. The institution flourished, encompassing esteemed colleges in Medicine, Engineering, Physiotherapy, Homeopathy, Nursing, Science, and Liberal Arts. This remarkable success culminated in Vinayaka Missions being recognized as a “Deemed to be University” in 2001. This prestigious status, conferred by the Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India, on the recommendations of the UGC under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, marked a significant milestone. Vinayaka Missions subsequently transformed into Vinayaka Missions Research Foundation (VMRF), becoming India’s 48th University.

The prime objective of VMKVMC is “To create and nurture an ever-enthusiastic community of students dedicated to alleviating ill health and improving well-being for all through excellence in teaching and learning, research and discovery, and service and leadership”.
